AileyCamp FAQ
AileyCamp is a four-week summer day camp where pre-teens are “turned on” to dance, and come to respect the discipline of dance as a physical activity which requires athletic ability comparable to skills demanded by any sport. Also, campers increase their leadership skills and enjoy a variety of athletic and social activities. They learn that dance is challenging, fun, and helps them in other sports and in life!
Who is Eligible?
One hundred Boys and Girls, who are currently in the 6th and 7th grade (ages 11-14), will be selected from applications received. Students must reside in Missouri to attend camp at the Missouri site or reside in Kansas to attend camp at the Kansas site. No prior dance training is necessary.
How are students selected?
Need, gender, and ethnicity relative to district wide representation are factors in the selection process.
When is AileyCamp?
AileyCamp is for four weeks, June through July. Camp starts at 7:30am and ends at 2:25pm, Monday – Friday. These are four action-packed weeks! Campers must attend each day, unless they are ill. Please do not apply if you cannot commit to sending your child each day for the entire four weeks. If you have other plans during the four week camp session, i.e. vacation, Kauffman Scholar program, athletic/band camp, etc… PLEASE DO NOT APPLY.
What is the cost of AileyCamp?
AileyCamp is free! Dance attire, transportation, field trips, breakfast, snacks and lunches are provided for campers thanks to generous cash and in-kind donations from corporations, foundations, government agencies, community groups and individuals.
Where is AileyCamp?
AileyCamp is held at two sites, one in Kansas City, Missouri and one in Kansas City, Kansas. Missouri Camp Site is Paseo High School, 4747 Flora Ave, 64110. Kansas Camp Site is West Middle School, 2600 N 44th St., 66104. Campers that reside within the KCMSD summer program boundaries in Missouri or within the Kansas City, Kansas USD500 District boundaries will be transported by school bus to and from designated pickup points. Campers that reside outside district boundaries must arrange their own transportation to and from camp.
Campers that reside in Topeka, KS will be transported daily by school bus to and from a designated pickup point
Who Sponsors AileyCamp?
AileyCamp is sponsored by Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey, a non-profit organization, incorporated in 1984 to establish an on-going presence of Alvin Ailey in Kansas City. KCFAA receives contributions from corporate, foundation, government and individual donors in addition to school district support.
How may I apply?
DON’T DELAY, SPACE IS LIMITED!!! Interested students may apply by means of in-school recruitment, online, or by calling KCFAA. Application does not guarantee acceptance.
